Get the emo mug.a style of music formed in 1980's and 1990's with clean guitar for the verse, and heavy distortion during the chorus. the lyrics usually are emotional, having to do with emotions. such as love, hate, anger, past screw ups. But in no way does emo involve kids cutting themselves, or wearing tight jeans, or scarfs or any of that crap. emo started as a style of music, and has now turned into a degrading form of self expression. i hate what emo has turned into...because in fact, most bands nowadays can be classified as emo, but people are just too used to thinking emo is, black hair, tight pants, and all that. IT ISN'T!!!!!!!
For example...a band nowadays that should actually be classified as emo is, Boys Like Girls...to be more specific, Me, you, and my medication. Listen to it. it starts out clean guitar, and during the chorus goes into distorted guitar.

Get the emo mug.A steryotype for teenagers.
Emos generally have died black hair that covers part of the face (mainly the eyes) and wear tight fitting clothes.
The word 'emo' is short for 'emotional' and generally refers to someone of roughly the above description who 'is not afraid to' express their feelings of hatred about the world. For example, a person who openly feels wonderful about society is not emo. An emo feels hard done by and skeptical about society, and some become so depressed by their own dark thoughts that they try to 'end the nightmare' and commit suicide. The most comonly thought of way of doing this is slitting their wrists.
Some emos go a step further in expresing their feelings by being open about their sexual preferences, see 'emo boy kissing' for more info.

Get the emo mug.Emo : Slang for Emotional, An emotion is a mental and physiological state associated with a wide variety of feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. It is a prime determinant of the sense of subjective well-being and appears to play a central role in many human activities. As a result of this generality, the subject has been explored in many, if not all of the human sciences and art forms. There is much controversy concerning how emotions are defined and classified. Get the Emo mug.Emo. "Emotional" "Emotive" Or whatever you want to call it, is a genre of music which started in the early 80's (Yes 80's) with first wave and new wave.
Now it is a genre of music which incorporates sounds from punk, goth rock, pop rock, first wave, new wave, and even grunge rock. All music is emotional but this is the only type of music with its own genre called "emo" And like in most music genres a cult following backs it, creating a "scene" of people. The "Emo Scene" incorporates the dark clothes of goth with a new wave hairstyle with punk accessories.
The "Emokids" all don't act the same, they don't all dress the same, they don't all mope and cry about their lives. Only the posers do that. Same with the whole cutting part, its not cool. Razor blades may be a fun thing to cut.. Like.. Paper and stuff with, but not yourself. So, please, don't cut yourself.

Get the emo mug.Emo is a complex beast. It came from the late 80s in the form of Rites of Spring, and slowly changed. From there it became Sunny Day Real Estate, Jimmy Eat World, The Get Up Kids, and Cap'n Jazz. But as the remaining ones of these bands slowly changed the style of their music, they were still associated with the term and bands that were like them got the name. Fall Out Boy could be considered emo because of the fact that Pete Wentz admitted something along the lines of if there wasn't The Get Up Kids, there would be no Fall Out Boy. But The Get Up Kids still are not anything like old, decent emo. It's just that genres change, they move on.
But now people who listen to this new MTV emo adopted a fake personality. Make up, crying, pretending to be deep, wallowing in pain and crying because no one accepts them. They're annoying and fake. They are what most people call emo now, and they tainted the good name of Rites of Spring.

Emo: WAAAH MY GIRLFRIEND BROKE UP WITH ME! Time to cry while listening to Dashboard Confessional and cutting my wrist. The world doesn't understand me!

Get the emo mug.Emo was a genre of music that developed out of the failing straight edge movement, especially in the DC area when bands such as Minor Threat and Bad Brains began to lose popularity.
These bands decided to take the energy of punk rock but without the anger, creating emo. Bands include: rites of spring, indian summer, some fugazi, ect. During emos height (84-87), it was generally very emotional, fast, and powerful music. Eventually, it became influenced by pop (much like punk) and is what it is today. It has also become a term to describe someone who is depressed and overly emotional, generally for attention.

I was wondering how Rites of Spring and My Chemical Romance are both labeled Emo and are completely different.
