dark ambient

Dark ambient is like a marriage between ambient and industrial. Is naturally dark and much more interesting than regular ambient. Doesn't feature any cheesy synths, unless made by an ex black metal musician (that oftenly makes people bitch about whether the music is dark ambient or not; it usually is not). Usually doesn't feature any guitars. On those rare cases when it does (like in drone doom), it's definitely non-conventional use.
Much influenced by "musique concrete", dark ambient features recorded sounds, oftenly of non-musical nature.
Dark ambient can have various esthetics. Moaning and chanting, chain rattling (no, that's no ghost) raison d'etre-like stuff, radioactive droning of Fallout soundtrack, heavy pounding sounds of mechanisms, crazy shamanic drum-machine sounds, abrasive noise fragments - all these can make up different moods in dark ambient.
People who don't get dark ambient music, are found scrolling through the tracks in their desperate attempt of finding "where does at least SOME music start?"

There's also a tendency among some cultist freaks to puke up some really lousy synth pads and moans, put runes or pentagrams and some pseudo-religious texts on an album cover and call it "dark ambient", or "pagan/ritual/black dark ambient", or "neo-satanic nazi anti-nazi superficial industrial death dark ambient". Trust me, you don't wanna listen to that crap.
Don't get scared away by Deutsch Nepal's track names. That guy is a sick bastard, but he still makes some good dark ambient.

Workspace Ambient

A genre of ambient music for work or study. It is defined by being music that is *not* for listening i.e. underscore or undercurrent. Unobtrusive, calming, simple, reflective. The tonal quality of sounds is more important than melody. There may be chant (sacred or choral), binaural or other tonal/ rhythmic elements known to produce calming effect. There is typically ambient embellishment (e.g. sounds from nature). It is *not* elevator music miss you Astrud.
Unfortunately, the workspace ambient had sent the entire staff into a deep, peaceful sleep and productivity plunged that day... Just joking. Workspace ambient saved the day - 423% increase in staff productivity, no office arguments, and the the boss gave everyone bonus salary!

Materials that shouldn't exist under normal conditions but somehow do—room-temperature superconductors, stable metallic hydrogen, transparent aluminum, and other substances that would revolutionize everything if they could actually be made. The phrase is scientific shorthand for "things we've theoretically predicted but cannot practically produce," or more cynically, "grant proposals that will be funded for another decade." Exotic materials at ambient temperature and pressure would enable lossless power transmission, hovering vehicles, unbreakable everything, and a permanent place in the Nobel Prize committee's heart. Their absence from your daily life is a reminder that nature doesn't give up its secrets easily, and that "theoretically possible" is not the same as "actually feasible."
Example: "The researcher announced a breakthrough in room-temperature superconductors—exotic materials at ambient temperature and pressure that would transform the world. The stock of every energy company fluctuated wildly. Then the results couldn't be replicated. Then the researcher retired. Then someone else tried and failed. The exotic materials remained exotic—beautiful in theory, absent in practice."

ambien challenge

Taking the ambien challenge means taking the sleeping pill ambien and attempting to fight the pill's effects and stay awake as long as possible. Often results in hallucinations and cryptic writing.
whoa i was doing ok until you signed off about two hours into the ambien challenge and a fucking little kid ran out from behind my computer and i yelpedd practically before realizing he wasn;t real. then i turned to my right and saw the door was wobbling and shit. and i kept staring to see if was really wobbling or if it was just my imagination and it didn't stopp. Then i got up. WHOA.
