Something a lot of ignorant people try to discredit and write off as bullshit but it is when a person from any background takes something from someone else's culture and tries to make it their own. Literally a person trying to disassociate a culture from it's people.

Cultural Appropriation is not just Kim Kardashian wearing cornrows but becomes that when the media calls them "Kardashian Braids". More examples are if a girl were to wear an native american headress and call it a "feather hat," or A person wearing a bindi and calling it "the new forehead dot," must I go on???????

Cultural Appropriation is the very real theft of the elements of a minority culture, stolen by the majority, and joined into pop culture, without acknowledging the original creators of that culture. Elements that the original culture are usually made fun of for embracing, but are made trendy by the majority while abusing its significance. Anyone can appropriate culture.

"Do you see Steven with that tribal tattoo? "
"Total cultural appropriation he isn't even native American and he doesn't know what they stand for. He said they just looked cool"

When a jungle bunny screams and assaults a white boy for wearing dreads. But nonetheless you'll see said jungle bunny and beaners all over the place with blonde wig/dye jobs/ streaks. And blue contacts.

Fuck this shit i know shanikwa wasn't born with blonde hair, she is appropriating my culture. Thats text book cultural appropriation.

Increasingly, the term is used to purge non-white culture altogether.

when white people thinks it's okay to steal all the ~~~pretty~~~ or appealing things from cultures and use them for attention (i.e basically every white female celebrity with a bindi or miley cyrus and 'twerking') . It's pretty annoying and i ask you to please stop

Cultural Appropriation

The adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture. Many people mistake cultural appropriation with Cultural Appreciation. As there is a difference between taking the time to learn about a culture and taking a culture's traditions, clothing etc. and misrepresenting them.

Cultural Appropriation: Wearing a Native American costume is offensive because the clothing in that culture is very sacred
Cultural Appreciation: Taking some time to learn about Native American culture (traditional dances, clothing, foods etc.)

Not to mention some cultures have a dark history attached to them and they still face present-day issues.

So if you truly want to embrace a culture, then do a bit of research on the culture and do it properly.
