When someone punts, it's usually because they are faced with an uncomfortable situation where they are afraid to give a clear answer, response, or explanation to avoid judgment, ridicule, or scorn.

Instead of giving you a solid & factual answer, they chalk it up to "God's doing" or "God's work." It's also used frequently by parents who can't be bothered to do a Google search or open a book, so they tell their curious children (who ask brilliant questions) that "God did it" or "God created that."
