In the context of spiritual practice, rather than disappearing and ceasing to exist upon death, the passed-away individual continues to live on as their energy in a new plane (ie. heaven, etc) while being able to communicate with the living in the physical. Upon death, their energy/soul crosses from one state to another (afterlife) while being connected to both sides. It can be used to explain why the dead can communicate through divination such as tarot cards, pendulums, etc. It is a newer term in the context of spirituality. It can be used in the place of saying death, someone died, they are dead, etc.
