Mental Sophism

The use of psychological concepts—trauma, projection, defense mechanisms—to dismiss arguments rather than understand minds. Mental Sophism turns therapy-speak into debate weapon: "you're projecting" becomes a way to avoid engagement; "you're triggered" dismisses legitimate emotion; "you need therapy" pathologizes dissent. The mental sophist uses the language of healing to harm, psychology to dismiss.
"She raised a valid concern. 'You're projecting your trauma,' he replied—without knowing her, without engaging her point. Mental Sophism: therapy-speak as debate tactic. Psychology became a weapon, not a tool for understanding."

Political Sophism

The use of political language, concepts, and frameworks to defend positions that serve power rather than justice. Political Sophism invokes "freedom" to defend exploitation, "security" to justify oppression, "democracy" to mask oligarchy. It's sophistry in service of the state, using political ideals to obscure political realities.
"They called it freedom while cutting healthcare, education, and food assistance. Political Sophism: using liberation's language to justify deprivation. Freedom became a word for abandoning the vulnerable. The sophistry is in the naming: call it freedom, and you can get away with anything."

Economical Sophism

The use of economic language, models, and theories to defend positions that serve wealth while appearing neutral. Economical Sophism invokes "efficiency" to justify inequality, "incentives" to defend exploitation, "growth" to excuse destruction. It's sophistry with spreadsheets: using the appearance of rigor to obscure the reality of power.
"Tax cuts for the rich will trickle down, they said—decades later, it never did. Economical Sophism: using economic theory as a promise, not a prediction. The sophistry is in the confidence: they spoke with certainty about what never happened."

Cognitive Sophism

The use of cognitive science concepts—biases, heuristics, cognitive distortions—to dismiss arguments rather than understand thinking. Cognitive Sophism turns the study of mind into a weapon against minds: "that's confirmation bias" becomes a way to avoid engagement; "you're victim of cognitive distortion" pathologizes disagreement. The cognitive sophist uses the language of science to dismiss, not to understand.
"He called every disagreement a cognitive bias—confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, Dunning-Kruger. Cognitive Sophism: using science's vocabulary to avoid science's work. The terms became labels, not insights. Understanding was replaced by name-calling with a scientific veneer."

Psychological Sophism

The use of psychological concepts and authority to dismiss, pathologize, or silence dissent. Psychological Sophism turns diagnosis into weapon: "you're narcissistic" ends debate; "you're borderline" dismisses emotion; "you need help" pathologizes resistance. It's sophistry in therapist's clothing: using the language of healing to harm.
"She disagreed with him. 'You're clearly narcissistic,' he announced—no training, no diagnosis, just a label to win an argument. Psychological Sophism: using psychology's authority without psychology's responsibility. The label did the work that argument should have done."

Psychiatric Sophism

The use of psychiatric labels and authority to dismiss, control, or silence those who challenge power or convention. Psychiatric Sophism turns diagnosis into social control: political dissent becomes "paranoia"; resistance to injustice becomes "oppositional defiant disorder"; grief becomes "depression" that needs medication. It's sophistry in medical clothing: using the authority of psychiatry to pathologize the inconvenient.
"He protested injustice. They called him delusional. Psychiatric Sophism: using diagnosis as dismissal, psychiatry as policing. The label wasn't clinical; it was political. Psychiatry became a tool for silencing, not healing."

Neuroscientific Sophism

The use of brain scans, neuroscientific language, and neuro-authority to dismiss experience, consciousness, and meaning. Neuroscientific Sophism reduces every human phenomenon to brain activity, then uses that reduction to dismiss the phenomenon itself: "love is just dopamine"; "consciousness is just neural firing"; "spiritual experience is just temporal lobe activity." It's sophistry in a lab coat: using science's authority to explain away, not explain.
"Your meditation experience is just your prefrontal cortex deactivating. Neuroscientific Sophism: using brain scans to dismiss experience. The reduction was meant to explain away, not illuminate. But the experience remains, whether or not you can see it on an fMRI."
