thumb, pl. thumbs (archaic) - the scrolling finger. Before the digital age, the scrolling finger was used for a multitude of purposes, such as by Roman emperors to announce the decision of executing a gladiator and by police officers to record a suspect's fingerprint. Since the early 21st century though the only use of the scrolling finger has been to scroll news feeds in mobile applications such as Instagram, twitter and Facebook.

Rather than the thumbs up or thumbs down response to something, "thumbs in" denotes an inability to care less. While holding one thumb up and the other thumb down, you then bring both thumb gestures behind you and motion to place both thumbs "in" your ass.
