From southern family's tradition (somewhat more common in black families and seemingly not at all among the Spanish speaking families) of having their children address adults as Mr/Mrs ...where the adult's FIRST name (or given name) then follows. Probably borne out of the baby boomer Gen who prefer to be ever young so that rather than be known as Mr. Johnson(more common prior to 1990 or so when respect for elders was the social norm) kids are taught to call adults Mr. Doug, etc.
Wait until Mr.Doug gets here, he always knows what to do. Essentially, it's formally informal and averts the tired responsive phrase to the effect of, "MrJohnson was my dad, you can call me Doug"
