serious leisure

Serious leisure is the systematic pursuit of an amateur, hobbyist, or volunteer activity sufficiently substantial, interesting, and fulfilling for the participant to find a (leisure) career there acquiring and expressing a combination of its special skills, knowledge, and experience. The term was coined by Robert A. Stebbins

Leisure Class

(n) The privileged wealthy elite who spend their time traveling to far away places and engaging in conspicuous leisure. Wealthy tourists who engage in extreme sports, for example skiing, snow-boarding, rock-climbing, mountain-biking, river-rafting, etc.

A theory first conceived of by economist Thorstein Veblen in 1899 in his treatise The Theory of the Leisure Class, Veblen further details how working class people try to emulate the Leisure Class and idolize them to their own detriment.
Moab, Park City, Aspen and Vail have become infested with leisure class parasites who want to reform small towns into the image of whatever wealthy "progressive" communities they fled from.

leisurist

leisurist: noun Definition: An occupation. One who is in the pursuit of leisure. One who studies leisure with the intention of partaking of leisure. Plural (leisurists) Word history: Based on the word leisure with the addition if "ist" as in botanist, scientist. <My life as a leisurist was mostly filled with sailing, cruising and voyaging in my yacht, interspersed with lengthy bouts of salaried employment to cover costs.>

My wife and I are sailing cruisers who live on our yacht and spend extended periods cruising in the Pacific. In 1994 when asked by some friends if we had a name for ourselves I said that we were Leisurists. We all said “Wow, that is a good word.” We have been using it ever since as an occupation name. We use it on all forms and documents that require our Occupation from the TAX Department to air travel and Customs and Immigration. After inventing the word we looked for it in a range of dictionaries and on the internet and found that it was not being used. In 2000 it was still not being used except in our Webb Site. Then I sent the word to Merriam-Webster who stated that its usage would be monitored on the internet. If used it would be included. Today, 6th December 2007, there are 1050 hits for leisurist and 350 for leisurists on Google and I still cannot find it in any dictionaries.

I am sure glad I had on my flexible leisure trousers when I ate the triple patty hamburger with double the meat and a super sized value meal, otherwise my pants button would've shot across the room.
