Virtue Signaling

Espousing a moral position about an issue that matters, without individually doing anything about that issue, usually because the issue is too big for any individual to affect. This is an action scoffed at by any opposition, not realizing that if enough people virtue signal about the same issue, they shift hearts & minds to achieve a critical mass of support to the point that the issue is actually politically addressed.
In the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, there should be next to no poverty.

That's virtue signaling. Why don't you go donate to your neighborhood homeless shelter or something?

The problem's bigger than that, with 40 million in poverty, including over 10 million children, and 200 million living paycheck to paycheck, but it's not a problem that can't be solved.

virtue signaling

Virtue signaling describes a behavior of an individual openly seeking attention and external validation by ostentatiously pronouncing (generally through the use of social media) themselves to the world as someone possessing high moral values for a trivial decision made or action taken.
Brad: Did you see Thad made a lengthy post on TikTok about eradicating world hunger after his business school spring-break trip to Africa?
Chad: Is he donating his trust fund money to any major international world hunger charities? Is he going to work for one of these charities after business school?
Brad: No, he just accepted his offer in private equity and is just virtue signaling.

Virtue signaling

Virtue signaling is a word angry Proud Boy wannabes use to shame anyone who mentions Black Lives Matter.
"Black lives matter!"
"You're virtue signaling so people think you're a good person."
"No, Black lives really do matter. You just want me to stop talking about this. I won't, and if want to talk about how good a person I am on social media, I'll do that, too."

Virtue Signaling

A term used by fascists who believe they're of a higher moral standing when someone makes a factual statement.
Jimbo: He should have just complied.
Bob: So you believe govt employees should be able to tell you what to do and punish you if you dont comply?
Jimbo: Not a chance in hell. I will not comply to the govt. I'll be damned if the govt tells me what to do.
Bob: You do know law enforcement is the govt. Buddy, that's virtue signaling.

Virtue Signaling

To put on airs of being concerned about a social issue solely with the intent of flaunting your morals to the world.
Putting "BLM" in your Twitter bio does nothing to help people actually affected by such issues. It is mere virtue signaling.

Pandering to SJWs with insincere, yet sufficiently "moral", behavior
Joker (2019) was virtue signaling by casting black women in highly generic, though clearly negative, roles.

A bigoted preacher using inclusive pronouns is virtue signaling for the soundbite audience.

Something conservatives accuse liberals of doing any time they show any virtue at all.
This person told me I should be nice to gay people, I'm so sick of this virtue signaling!
