The history of the phrase comes from the uses of a petard in a seige (a petard is a volitile early explosive capable of bringing down castle walls). To be hoisted is to be lifted or sent up, which is generally what would happen to you if you were near a petard when it goes off (and that's if you got off lucky).
The term, "Hoisted on my own petard" is incorrect (unless of course you were pulled up while on a petard, but that'd be clinicly stupid) in that the meaning is altered. This bastardization is built upon the assumtion that a petard is a spear.

Get the Hoisted by my own petardmug. People that demonstrate their stupidity by being hoisted in ignorance by their own lack of words. Having to face the reality of "not knowing" despite the interaction with others more knowledgable than you.
At the end of the day, the bluster was ended when the petarded dude was asked to demonstrate his lack of knowledge by asking him to put up or shut up.

Get the Petardedmug. Taken from "Hoisted by his own petard" (Petard is some 16th century shaped charge for breaking into fortresses. If the bomb goes off while the French guy is installing it on the wall, he is then hoisted by his own petard). So when you or someone has plans or an occupation or way of doing things that blows up in their face or defeats their own purposes, they are then, petarded. Especially fun if you can't use the 'r' word in certain company...
He tried showing off by rushing through but he just screwed up spectacularly and now he's soooo petarded.
