The attorney is based on the real man, Oscar Acosta, who was also there and is Chicano, not Samoan. Hunter tried to get first SI, then Rolling Stone to cover "expenses" but they were deemed too outrageous - Random House paid for it, giving them future control of HST's book.

The vacation turns highly irresponsible and reckless as the two consume copious amounts of illegal drugs, commit various acts of fraud, and generally wreak mayhem upon the citizens of Las Vegas.
The novel is responsible for introducing an innovative literary style called gonzo journalism, a style of reporting that mixes fiction and factual journalism.
