Not the guy that looks like the short-stack drummer. The term "indie" simply means individual, and the people following the 'indie scene' are posers trying too hard.
Indie music consist of bands like Muse, Arctic Monkeys...mainly weird english bands.

music released on an independant label that has now somehow become a rock radio trend. it has developed its own sound. mostly weak vocals backed up by uninteresting repetitive music. lyrics are the usually the strong points in this music but dont make up for the lack of passion and energy.

Indie is a shortform of "independent"; it is often used to describe a person or a group of persons who in their life style, taste and outlook take a rather sophisticated and Bohemian stand against the mainstream.
Indie as an avantgarde discourse began spreading in the beginning of the twenty-first-century and has not yet reached its climax, but a new parellel, and even more "Indie" development is beginning to evolve slowly especially in Scandinavia: "First Indie"
"First Indie" is a discursive combination and contraction of two concepts; "First mover" and "Indie".
The "First Indie" is extremely independent in its nature, lifestyle and perception of the world and people around him, but what differs him/or her from the "old indie" is that he doesn't see the concept of distancing himself from the mainstream as a goal in itself, but rather "First Indie" uses the mainstream media to his own advantage to set his subjective agenda.

Person 1: Why did you join that television show - it is so mainstream?
Person 2 "First indie (or real indie)": I know it is, that's why I joined it.
Person 1: What!!! You have a black hat - how could you do that, I thought you were sooooo indie?
Person 2 (first indie): Well, that's not up for me to define - but I wanted to use the mainstream media for my own individual(idealistic) purposes. I mean if you want to communicate with people who don't belong to your normal sphere, it's a rather good idea to try to go ahead and cross the sphere, right?

A movie produced by an independent studio, or an unheard-of writer/director; it tends to star actors you've never seen before. Indie movies commonly make you feel artistic or inspired after watching them... or, sometimes, just leave you feeling like you wasted an hour and a half of your time watching something that made absolutely no sense. Can also be referred to as an artsy movie.
"Hey, lets go to Blockbuster and rent some indie movies! I heard Wristcutters and The Chumscrubber were really good!"

A person, usually a self appointed "Musician" who particularly entertains the idea that their taste in music is really different and unique to everyone else's, and is usually convinced that any band who experiences commercial success has "sold out", even if said fan may have previously claimed to have liked that band before their peers.
Putting three Indie Snobs in a room together is usually dangerous and somewhat anti social, as they will continually argue with each other over who liked a band first.

Regular John: Mate. Muse are playing in a few months, I haven't seen em yet. Wanna go?
Indie Snob: Bitch please, I saw them years ago when they still played in bars.
Indie Snob #2: Yeah? I went to High School with one of them.
Indie Snob #3: Pretty sure I was there watching their grandparents have sex, you're all newcomers.

Its not about how you look
its about how you think
its not about what you listen to
or what you wear
its about why you do.
Indie isn’t a 'look' or a 'style' it’s part of the way you think, independent from what the mainstream wants you to think (which would explain the love of political debates), independent from what Elle and Cosmo want you to wear this month, independent from what MTV plays, independent from labels and restrictions in general. Basically indie means following your own mind.
Meaning: if you listen to a song or wear clothes because it’s the latest chart topper or must have
and stop listening to it or wearing it because its "soo last month"
- you're not 'so-called' indie simply because you are obviously not thinking
independently, you follow what others prescribe, suggest, and do.
Therefore if you listen to indie bands and wear skinnys and scarfs
because you want to be indie then you are NOT indie, because you are yet
again simply following.
The only reason why I think there even is a ‘indie look’ is because all 'indie peeps'
think alike and shy away from labels and anything mainstream and commercial.
This of course does not mean that they never ever wear labels or like something
that is commercial it just means that if and when they do, it’s not because it’s a
label or whatever, but because they want to and they don't allow themselves to be
bound by some definition and set of do's and don’ts.
They think for themselves , they like what they want.

Trying to be an indie person contradicts the whole concept...
it's not something you can buy, its something you just are,
dressing in skinny's and oldish clothe's to be an indie person won't make you indie, it just makes you a poser.
