Usually offensive subject matter is used for an ironic effect or some other sort of psychological effect. For instance, a person may make racist jokes due to humor in the ridiculousness of what is being said and the stupidity of racist stereotypes. Certain slang that was common on the early internet (e.g. "fag, retarded") may be regarded as edgy humor, because these terms were used in a figurative and sarcastic tone, rather than being meant or believed literally.
Because offensive jokes have the potential to be misunderstood and the people offended have a desire to demonize said jokes, edgy humor is normally taken out of context nowadays to just mean "person using jokes to push bad beliefs or prejudices". Edgy humor has had its meaning changed by some as people wish to entirely discount the idea that people can like offensive subjects ironically as humor. Other examples are usually stuff like people saying "i like kids" and "the holocaust didn't happen", while the person is saying this, he is busting his mind open from these humorous claims. Back in the '60s-early '80s, "edgy" referred to talented satirists like George Carlin who took well-deserved potshots at a notoriously conservative, straight-laced, and repressive establishment who had strict rules about what you could and couldn't say on broadcast. Nowadays, since people like Carlin basically won that battle a long time ago, and it's normal to hear people talking about vibrators on Oprah, "edgy" refers to people who just say outrageous things for shock value, or take knee-jerk, reflexive anti-authority/anti-status-quo stances without carefully thinking over the ramifications of what they're advocating.
I spent 10 minutes on Reddit, and in those 10 minutes, I learned from some 14-year-olds that the Holocaust is hilarious, that all fat people are lazy pieces of shit, and that the reasonable solution to environmental pollution is to ban all cars. How very, very edgy.
