The implication is that the large cross they wear is largely for social cred because their behavior indicates that they are not serious about living the values they profess to have.
Sarah always wears that big, gold cross and mentions Jesus all the time, but honestly, I've never known anybody so catty and mean. I think she's just a necklace Christian.
