Sweet, in this context, is used to express relief, usually at something you didn't want to happen, no longer happening.
Let's say you are meant to do an exam tommorow, but it gets cancelled, that brings relief. I would say "sweet mate" for example.
Think of it as a replacement for "good". ("good" -> "sweet")
