running full-out

To run like Britney Spears (presumably when she was attractive) while being Neil Peart.
Oh my god! He runs faster than Britney Spears! And she was running full-out!” - Originally uttered by an anonymous elderly female security worker for a Rush concert. This version of the quote is the one told by Mr. Neil Peart during an interview after some show, or something.

fight or run away

The correct way to express the term"fight or flight," because human beings do not literally fly.
The fact that flight rhymes with fight may be why the term "fight or flight" is used. As clever and useful as it is, it is not factual. Thus,"fight or run away" might be a better way to express that unique state.

running on impulse engines

In the original Star Trek series, whenever the main engines (warp drive) broke down (which was pretty frequent) the Enterprise would only be able to move using "impulse engines" - a low power, sub-lightspeed manouvering system based on a small fusion ram/ion drive.

By inference, someone described as "running on impilse engines" or "impulse power only" is either:

1. Very tired (a.k.a. 'running on empty')

2. Genuinely ill

3. (derog.) Slow and/or stupid.
"Jesus, I've just had to brief the sales guys on the new product.... they're all running on impulse engies up there".

"You want to go for a beer ?"

"No, man, I'm running on impulse engines... got to go home and grab some sleep."

running before the catch

Acting as if something good will definitely happen, without it happening yet, and then paying for such optimism.

Derived from football, where the wide receiver starts thinking about what he is going to do AFTER the catch, before the ball gets to him. Inevitably the wide receiver drops the ball.
I swore I was going to get an offer from that company I have been interviewing with, so I haven't done any work in days. The job fell through. I was running before the catch.
