Emo is a style, wearing dark clothes usually black, black painted nails/hair, and the hair can be shaggy and swooped across the face usually long. Emo can also be a mentality, someone who is in tune with their own emotions, they understand themselves, self harm too but we dont talk about that. One more thing that could make you emo is music taste, for instance, all types of rock and metal genres fit into emo. Some artists that would fit the emo genre would be: Joel Faviere, Get Scared, Black Veil Brides, and so on.
You dont need to fit all the criteria to be Emo, just one is fine, And if you fit some of it and dont want to be called Emo, then thats alright, you do you.

Some people may think the word Emo as a phase. They think of it as a bad thing. Emo is short for "Emotional" wich, there are many emotions. Such as Happiness, saddness, anger, etc. You can be emo, in a happy way, Or in a sad way. so if anyone calls you emo, reply with "everyone is". They'll think you're so dumb, they'll shut up.
