a group of friends gather and yell BUM RUSH and gang up on a poor defensless person as a group of bums would do for money and without regard of the persons heath,spray him with different kinds body deoderant everywhere of his body until he/she is on the ground gasping for air.

we totally bum rushed matt with axe until he was lying on the ground motionless.

Similar to the expression "left holding the baby". i.e. you ask a group of friends or colleagues to volunteer or help in some way, and everyone actively avoids you. All you can see are "bums rushing away from you".

I asked my friends to help paint my new home, but all I got was a bum rush.
