A pain sponge is a very strong person. They enjoy being vented to and "soaking up others pain" because they are extremely sympathetic. They usually never express their negative feelings, or tell people their problems, because they don't like to worry people. Pain sponges live for the sole purpose of making people happy. It can be dangerous to be a pain sponge or emotionally close to one (i.e. close friends, lover, etc.) because once they soak up enough pain (I note that it is a very high amount) they will have a breakdown, or the sponge will "squeeze the pain out" of themselves.
I just so happen to be a pain-sponge. I listen to other peoples problems but never share my own, because I wouldn't want to worry them.

To be in a state of not feeling overt pain. A state of anti-inflammation.
The name for a Schiff brand (trademark) joint supplement that was later pulled by the FDA - as it was too blatantly a health claim in the name of the product, later renamed.
In common useage now, the term can indicate any mode of feeling good or feeling a lack of pain ... be it physical, mental, emotional, etc.

Easily the most annoying of enemies in Doom 2. Has relatively higher HP than most of the lower enemies, but thankfully not enough to compete with enemies like the Baron. It's attack consists of shooting a shitload of flaming skulls at you until it's dead. Usually comes with other monsters. Also floats like the Cacodemon.
That pain elemental is a pain in the ass.
