A word used as a derogatory term towards African-Americans. The word came about during the time of slavery as an insult to demean the spirits of slaves who were brought against their will from Africa. However, when slavery ended, the use of the word continued because of racist feelings. The word was made popular when hip-hop came about in the seventies. The "er" was dropped off of the end and became an "a" due to the way many African-Americans pronounce their words. Many African-Americans attempted to change the meaning from a derogatory term to a word that meant "friend". Contrary to popular belief, not all African-Americans use this word to call their other friends of African descent. Many African-Americans are still offended by the use of the word in any context.

Get the niggermug. 1.Its initial use began during the slave trade and is used today in some circles, as a term to describe black people with no negative connotation.
2.The word then evolved into derrogatory term used by the slave owners and subsequentially by racists towards black people and because of this use, is still an offensive word.
The main point here is slavery. Referring to an individual as "nigger" in this context is akin to calling them a slave or somebody of a lower class.
3.Descibes a person of any race, sex, religion or any other social division who embodies negativity and is proud of it or makes no effort to change ie lazy, ingnorant, lacks ambition, leeches off other people, takes no responsbilty for themselves etc.
In this context, used by black people, the term is more an attack on the character of a person rather than their race.
There is a difference between a black man/woman and a nigger, mainly in their attitudes towards life and how they behave.
Using this definiton you could say that every race has niggers, people that generally do nothing positive for society.
4.A term of endearment and familiarity similiar to blood, mate or buddy- popular in the entertainment industry.
This use of the term has been controversial as many believe that the word's meaning has changed with the rise in popularity of hip hop culture. This has seen the word been used as a term of endearment between black people, black and white people, white people and practically every other race which has integrated hip hop culure.
