The effort is generally considered ineffective and wasteful. Public reports credit Professor Pamela Karlan of Stanford Law School with coining the term (and disapproving of the practice).

Variations include:
-A character talking about their lack of confidence in something not to another character, but to the reader.
-A character getting the courage to go off and accomplish things today.
-A character growing tired while drawing at a cintiq and then getting a second wind.
-A character waxing nostalgic about their childhood, then comparing it to their life now, then seeing kids doing a modern day version of what they were doing as a kid, and coming to the conclusion that things will be ok.
