honeybot

A social media account which initially appears to be that of a real person , but is designed to lure unsuspecting users to interact or share information. A combination of the “honeypot” scenario with “bot,” referring to social media accounts which exist only to generate online engagement - with the ultimate goal often being financial scamming, but also to drive particular narratives - often political. Many honeybot accounts use profile pictures of attractive young women as “bait.”

My widowed uncle’s Facebook account has over 700 friends, but most of them are honeybot accounts; he has a bad habit of accepting friend requests from complete strangers - most of whom appear to be pretty young women from around the world. Interestingly, these Facebook honeybots predictably “like” all of his political rants, giving him the confidence to continue making such posts.
