try-hard

A person who spends much of their time trying to perfect a certain game (usually an online competitive game). They achieve this great level of skill through watching Youtube videos and imitating their style of playing. When they achieve this skill, they are better than the majority of the community, thus get the name "try-hards".

This try-hard asshole just beat me 21-2 in a game of Rocket League!

A student (typically in high school) who puts excessive effort and emotional investment in schoolwork; they will usually downplay their achievements and have extremely high standards for what qualifies as a "good" grade.

"I only have a 95 in Honors Algebra II. I barely qualify for the accelerated math course."
"Shut up, try-hard."
