1) A small, liberal arts college southwest of Philadelphia, founded in 1864 by the Religious Society of Friends but no longer affiliated with them officially. Swarthmore College is known for its rigorous academic program, which has prompted its students to adopt the unofficial motto "Anywhere else it would have been an A."
