To buy, and accept into something without analyzing or questioning, and the ignorance resulting in consequences. The term was coined after the 1978 "Jonestown" or "Peoples Temple Agricultural Project" incident, which happened in the Jonestown establishment in Guyana. 909 people died, in which 304 were children. Individuals would drink Kool-Aid without knowing it was laced with Cyanide, a deadly chemical if inhaled or ingested, resulting in the town being known for the mass suicide.

To make a wholehearted, unconditional commitment (to some group, or idea, or plan) in contrast to choosing an alternative. It emphasizes a resolute decision (good or bad) in response to a choice.
This is a reference to the "electric Kool-Aid acid tests," which were LSD parties held in the San Francisco Bay area in the mid 1960's. Someone who was willing to drink the LSD-laced Kool-Aid had, symbolically, made a choice to join (if only for a few hours) a counterculture that stood against conventional society. Once you take acid, you're committed -- the trip lasts for hours and you can't cut it short or change your mind. Once you've drunk the kool-aid, you're firmly committed.
IMHO it is not about suicide: kool-aid isn't a symbol for poison.

A idiomatic phrase that refers to an unsubstantiated but strongly argued opinion that is rejected outright as being held by a person or persons that is under the effect of a hallucinogenic drug. Kool-Aid spiked with LSD is the root from where this late 1960’s early 1970’s phrase originated.
If you think that the president will be impeached because of his inappropriate activities with women, then you’ve been drinking the kool-aid.
