a word usually referring to a woman or young girl ... universally used just as a respectful way to call for a girl/woman without knowing or saying their name ....

this term can also be used by old folks when they like to get a smart mouth but its the same meaning a young girl/woman even if you are 80 yrs old if someone is older than you and calls you young lady it isn’t to take offense .

Person 1 : Excuse me young lady, you dropped your pen .

Person 1 : You can give your paperwork to the young lady at window 4, thank you have a nice day .
