(n.) Straiht edge is the term coined by Ian MacKaye (lead singer of the early 80's punk band 'Minor Threat'). To 'have the straight edge' one must hold a great responsibility for his/her actions and most commonly not get involved with casual sex, drinking, smoking, or any other substances (living a drug free life) some straight edgers even go vegan (or become vegetarians) being straight is just more of a philosophy on life; a religion focusing on strength, self-preservation, and self-respect, some may call it.

Not inherently a bad thing, though it can be said that abstaining from drugs, alcohol and sex does deny many experiences, both good and bad, it is, however, used frequently to grab the moral high ground so that one may look down on those who choose to indulge in such terrible, despicable, and ungodly vices.

Okay, wow. I'm really sick of all the people who are saying people that are sXe are pussies. Okay, no.
Being sXe means following the three X's: no drugs (X), no drinking (X), and no casual sex (X). Basically, being healthy. It's about respecting yourself and being strong enough not to need drugs and alcohol to make life fun. Some sXe people choose to be vegetarian, vegan, etc. but it's not necessary by any means. Others also choose to avoid drugs (medicines), although that kind of negates the whole "being healthy" thing.
Real sXe people will not condemn others for not being sXe. They also won't announce to everyone in the fucking world that they're sXe - it's a personal choice and it should remain private. Some people choose to show that they're sXe by having X's on their hands, and that's fine too. Just another personal choice.
Contrary to popular belief, it has nothing to do with religion, cursing or the scene. It may have originated in the punk scene, but it has spread out and away from it - not every sXe person is punk, emo, etc.
Please refrain from being ignorant and keep an open mind.

I made the decision years ago not to drink/smoke/do drugs... and I don't want to sound like an idiot but even if the opportunity was there to sleep around I wouldn't anyway. I decided all this before I'd even heard of straight-edge, infact I only found out about it last night when I was hanging out with my drinking, smoking friends.
And I'm pleased that the term straight edge is about because it means I have something easier to say if anybody offers me any of the above.
I also appreciate that for some people it's part of the whole non-conformity thing, like following the emo trend... Where they are conforming to non-conformity, if you get what I mean.
But it's unfair to assume that 'straight-edgers' go around in gangs beating the crap out of people because they're smoking. All my friends drink, and all my friends smoke, and most of my friends'll happily sleep around... I just sit there with my bottle of water and enjoy myself like they do.
So you folks on here that call us fags/losers can sod off because that's simply not true in all cases.

Straight Edge is basically a way of life that includes no drinking, no drugs, and so casual sex. Abbreviated SxE. It is not a religion or a gang. It is a choice that someone makes. However, not everyone who doesnt drink/do drugs/have casual sex is straight edge, and not all that say they are straight edge, are straight edge. People who are SxE might put black x's on their hands. yes, you can be friends with people who do these things. There are a few types of straight edge kids.
ex.
The true SxE kid - does not drink, does not have casual sex, and does not do drugs. Also, does not go around telling everyone he meets right away that he is SxE, when the time comes to bring it up, he does tell. Does not think himself better than others becasue he does not drink or do drungs or not have sex. Does not beat people up for smoking or drinking.
Asshole SxE kid - Abides by the 3 rules of SxE, but goes around thinking he is better than everyone, puts people down for it, and basically bugs the fuck out of people.
Scene/Fashioncore SxE Kid - Wears x's on his hands all the time, and wears a bandana around his mouth and nose all the time, usually has died black hair. Most of these kids are not actually SxE, hell, most of them dont even know the true meaning or SxE but say they are to get friends/be cool/fit in. They are the SxE trend kids, and give True SxE'rs a bad name. Becasue of these kids, most kids just think being SxE is wearing black x's and bandanas around your face.
Hardliner - Super SxE kids that usually are vegan, wont take drugs even for severe pain, drink caffeine, or do anything like that. There most defining trait ,however, is the fact that they beat the living shit out of people for smoking, drinking or doing drugs. They might see someone doing one of these things, not bothing them at all, get a bunch of their friends, and beat the shit out of one person with somewhere between 2-? people. These people sometimes kill the people they attack. They are the biggest threat to true SxE people. A lot of cops and other uninformed people, becasue of hardliners, believe SxE people to be a gang, and believe ever SxE kid will beat the shit out of someone smoking or drinking or something like that. They are hated by most SxE kids.
True Straight edge kid (when asked about drinking/drugs/sex) - "yeah, i dont do drugs, drink, or have casual sex. You do? ok, your choice man."
