But after Christmas has passed, he will deny any and all of his behavior for the past month or so, and build a thick macho facade to last through February, or until his friends stop teasing him.

I think he is implying that this so called Watermelon Sugar may be in fact a drug , because if you did not know, drugs make you high. I am thinking that this drug, may be very sweet, due to the point that he is trying to make, that it tastes sweet like watermelons and their sugar. He is also very dependent on the drug, because he knows he doesn’t think he could ever go without that Watermelon Sugar.
