southern term for losing one's temper, "flying off the handle", etc. Note that the R.E.M. song of this title has nothing to do with religion, despite the common misinterpretation of the phrase.

it literally means "losing my temper" or "going insane" to some degree. If you would look at the REM lyrics to the song by the same name, it makes more sense, it really has nothing to do with religion.
I was pretty much losing my religion after being forced to listen to rap music by all the freshman girls at my school.

When I mentioned I wanted to become a woman, my girlfriend totally lost her shit.
Good grief, if you kids don't stop with this jackassery, I'm going to lose my shit!

When somebody is winding you up and you are trying not to let them see how much they're winding you up, you're keeping your cool. When a situation is difficult or stressful, but you're not letting the demands of the situation affect you, you are keeping your cool. If you do finally explode, implode or crumble under the pressure of a situation, you 'lose your cool' and thus lose control of your emotions.
"If that prick keeps on winding me up, I'm gonna smack him."
"Hey, relax. He's doing it on purpose, Don't lose your cool or he'll know he's got to you."

A phrase from an old NES game called Bokasuka Wars (which is regarded as the worst game ever by many). Whenever the player lost the game (which was quite often), the words "WOW, YOU LOSE" appaeared on-screen.
