Viral Math

When a brain-unfriendly, tricky, or ill-posed oft-elementary math question in a national exam is shared rapidly and widely on the internet, because an obscene number of unhappy students and their clueless parents could not solve it, who blamed the problem poser of the “unfair” question for causing them trauma, nightmare, pain, or suffering, with some even entertaining suicidal thoughts.

Singapore’s high-stakes Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE)—grade six—exam is notorious for setting viral math questions almost every other year—the PSLE math paper via its higher order thinking skills (HOTS) questions acts as a social filter to filter out the nerds from the herd.

New Normal Math

When math teachers reluctantly have to come to terms with new habits that would help them to keep their jobs in the new normal or post-pandemic, be it switching to more Zoom lessons in the aftermath of new lockdowns, monitoring students’ oft-unsatisfactory progress on Google Classroom, or communicating with ever-demanding parents on WhatsApp.

How many math educators worldwide decide to retire prematurely, as they can’t cope with the new normal math demands expected of them in the light of new waves of infection plaguing their nations?

Tabloid Math

Juicy talks in mathematical circles on who are working on which projects or proofs, or who have been offered tenure, especially among the “office politicians” who were unprovenly promoted based on their close or intimate relationship with the boss rather than on their published papers and teaching awards.

Stabbing each other on the back, bitching about promoted or demoted fellow colleagues, and the like are part and parcel of tabloid math conversation, which preoccupies the minds of thousands of frustrated or marginalized mathematicians at lunchtime.
