Ben Roberts-Smith (BRS) was a “war hero” with medals. After media reported on possible war crimes, BRS sued. This court case drew national and international attention, raised awareness of alleged war crimes and other possible unlawful actions. On 31 May 2023 the USA warned that possible SAS war crimes may result in suspension of USA work with Australia’s SAS. On 1 June 2023 the court decided that media outlets had sufficiently proven the worst of their allegations. So, basically, one man’s defamation law suit resulted in global condemnation and impacted Australia’s relationships with allies in the countries where the alleged war crimes took place as well as detrimentally impacting international relationships with Five Eyes partners.
