They use is it when a leftist (e.g., someone against the US government's facilitating ethnic cleansing) suggests they, for example, might not support a Democratic candidate in an election. The liberal is suggesting that, by not supporting the Democratic candidate willingly funding genocide, the country will elect a right-wing candidate who will throw the leftist and their family into a concentration camp. By implication, In this scenario, the middle-of-the-road liberal knows that they and their family will NOT end up in a camp because they will escape notice. By further implication, but perhaps not admitted by the liberal, the liberal will escape the camps because they will hide or change their purported values. Historically, in Nazi-era Germany, Romania, Portugal, and elsewhere, the liberal center, when given a choice between fascists and the left, have chosen fascists. This was because the fascists offered "order" and the protection of their property (as long as the liberal was of the correct race or politics).
