The term is closely associated with urban whites of the rust belt states who attempt to act higher in the socio-economic status than they really are.

They will make extravagant purchases to seem like they made it and may even talk about how they are only a few credits away from graduating from college. Everything they do is simply a ruse to make others believe they are doing better than what they are.
