cute in a family way; the way Homer Simpson describes Lisa Simpson to her in "Lisa the Beauty Queen" in season 4 of the Simpsons, one of the sweetest shows ever. for a female to say about an unrelated male would be to call that guy completely queer. for a guy to say about an unrelated girl would be for the boy to call himself completely gay. for a male to call a related male cute as a bug's ear would be messed up.

daughter: i'm ugly
father: no you're cute as a bug's ear
daughter: dads have to say that
father: dad, am i cute as a bug's ear?
grandfather: no

The idiom have one’s ears pinned back is an American phrase that came into use in the mid-1800s. Its origin is uncertain. Some say it is derived from the sport of wrestling and some say it is somehow linked to the emotional state of an animal with its ears pinned back, though both of these explanations seem rather dubious. It may be more likely that the phrase have one’s ears pinned back is related to some sort of physical punishment that has gone out of common use.
