best f-ing thing ever. the 2005-2006 topic is: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially
decrease its authority either to detain without charge or to search
without probable cause.

My favorite arg: Foucault, baby. Debaters are generally smarter than you, hotter than you, bigger than you, badder than you, and generally better than you in any way imagineable. especially policy debaters. Big shout out to all my TOC homies out there GOOD LUCK.

Dease

A synonym for good. It's origins came about from the notorious Luther Dease, the only Black teacher in all of Grand Haven, MI. Dease = good because black people = good.

K-Cash: "Dude that T-Bell was DEASE!"
Lo: "So was the Steven Wilkos show this morning."

Policy Debate

The most legit debate. Not only is it extremly difficult to master, it is extremly expensive with tubs, expandos, copier paper, and a constant supply of caffeine. Don't forget the evidence (cards). Valley's number one specialty. one On the Debate Scale it is ranked number one.

Policy Debate

A school ordained activity in which you call someone a racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic asshole for trying to come up with a plan to make the world a better place.

Policy Debate is truly a hellhole for anyone who wishes to have a legitimate discussion about government actions and their consequences. You will be hit so quickly with Ks calling you a fascist pig that you won't have time to count all the "Feel the Bern" stickers on your judge's backpack and computer.

LD Debate

A style of debate that is modeled after the debates that took place between Lincoln and Douglas.

A one v. one debate over a value laden topic.
Ex: Capital punishment is justified

The topics are intended to be argued as propositions of value and values are evaluated through value criterion. This means that, unlike other forms of debate which keep the value structure inherent in all argumentation hidden, LD debate requires you to make it explicit.

A value in LD is any abstract idea that you feel is important.

A value criterion is a way to know if you achieve that value.

Value - Economic Gain
Value Criterion - How much money is in my bank.

LD debate is well respected in academic circles because of its transparency in argumentation and its emphasis on philosophical and ethical frameworks. When done correctly it is a demonstration of the clash of values that give rise to human conflict. As such, many LD topics reflect common value conflicts like "Life vs. Quality of Life" "Freedom vs. Security" "Letter of the Law vs Spirit of the Law" etc.

The emphasis on discovering the "essences" or "real conflict" behind the arguments enhances critical thinking and aides students in learning to counter argumentation through logic and theory rather than through research and speed reading evidence.

If your not debating in LD Debate, you might as well just crumple up evidence and throw it at each other like in policy debate.
