It's appropriate use is when you're abruptly shocked or surprised by certain events.

Utterance of the phrase invokes emotions that represents grandiosity and awe

or sometimes it just sensationalizes the happening.

The longer the AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH and the POOOOTA is directly proportionate to how shocked you are.
If the event is certainly shocking, you may complete the said phrase to "AH PUTANG INA!" such that it may indicate how truly shocked you are.

Receptionist barges in and says more clients are coming.
"Ah pota! We're reaping huge this season!"
