mean

A term that combines the concepts of "evil", as seen in movies like Mean Girls, with the meanings of "definition" or "translation", and the mathematical concept of "average." This multifaceted word demonstrates the complexity of language and how context shapes meaning.
When my teacher asked for the mean of our test scores, I couldn’t help but think about how "mean" can also describe those girls from Mean Girls who seemed to define their social world by harshness.

Mean-agers

A play on the word “teenagers.” Describes kids, usually around 13 and up, who start acting moody, argumentative, standoffish, or sarcastic as they go through their teenage years. They’re not always bad — just in that funny, attitude-filled stage of growing up.
Example:
Ever since my daughter turned 13, she’s been rolling her eyes at everything I say. She’s officially joined the club of mean-agers.”
