This term is commonly used in messaging applications where read receipts are not directly associated with specific messages, requiring individuals to send their own messages as a way to indirectly monitor the read status of a particular message.

I wasn't sure if anyone noticed Emily's message about the potluck dinner, so I did some chat warding by sending a quick hello. Sure enough, the read receipts lit up, so I knew everyone got the memo.
