The British home fleet, commanded by Admiral John Tovey, was sent to sink the Bismarck. A small intercept fleet was sent to Iceland, commanded by Vice Admiral Lancelot Holland and the battlecruiser HMS Hood. When Hood and the Prince of Wales reached the Bismarck, the waters were too choppy, and the destroyers had to turn back, so the Hood and Prince of Wales had to fight the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen alone. The Hood was sunk and the Prince of Wales had to retreat. Eventually, near Brest, the battleships Rodney and King George V sunk the Bismarck
