voted off the island

"Voted off the island" is coined from the popular Survivor TV reality series. Used similarly to "throw under the bus" but it implies that more people (co-workers, your boss even) were involved in getting you off the team or fired. Basically, you are sacrificed so that the others can keep their own jobs. Sad truth is that "dog-eat-dog" survival exists in the office - especially in a bad economy - so keep your eyes and ears peeled for whisperers and frienenemies to minimize your chance of being voted off the island.

Mindy was voted off the island last week so now we're down to the original three managers in the department.

If Pete is not careful, he'll be voted off the island by the end of the month.

tiny country in the pacific made up of hundreds of islands. a british sailor named marshall founded the place for westerners, but the germans gained the islands in the 1800s. japan basically used it as 1 giant military base during wwii, and it became a us mandate after the war. it gained independence only 25 years ago, after the us grew tired of using it as 1 big nuke testing ground.

Islamophobia

Irrational fear or hatred of Muslims. Usually found immediately after any terrorist event, resulting in persecution and intimidation of law-abiding Muslim Americans, or anyone who could be mistaken for a Muslim or Arab. Contrary to ultra-right-wing rhetoric, Islamophobia is not disagreeing with the religion of Islam or Sharia law. Islamophobia is fear of Muslims.

Examples of Islamophobia:

1. Reporting your Muslim neighbor to the Department of Homeland Security because you thought the lawnmower he was repairing in his garage was a bomb.
2. Shooting a Sikh store clerk because he was wearing a turban, and you thought that only Muslims wear turbans.
3. Attacking a Muslim woman on the street because you thought she was a terrorist.
4. Detaining law-abiding Muslims and sending them to Guantanamo for extremely shady reasons.

Staten Island

The "forgotten" borough where the only thing besides the massive pot holes that kill teens from ages 16-19...is boredom. The borough of parks, trash, cemeteries, pizzarias and the "Zoo" . Our Zoo has four goats and a monkey...literally. The borough where one house can go down, and 37 can fit in its place, where the hair is high and the I.Q. is low. The place that has the "Mall," where the over-sexed and cake-faced tweens infest. There's one Barns 'n Noble bookstore (for those who dare to look away from their sidekicks) and a Target wayyyy in the back (where we sweep it underneath some rugs so people don't classify us a suburban lost cause.)

Mike: So what are we hittin up first?
Sam: Mall, movies...yeah that's it.
Mike: (sigh) Staten Island.
Sam: Yeah...Staten Island.
