The foundational principle of modern linguistics that the link between a word (like "tree") and the thing it represents is arbitrary. There's nothing tree-like in the sound "tree." The meaning is constructed entirely by social convention within a language community. Language isn't a mirror of nature; it's a cultural toolkit that shapes how we can even think about the world, constructing categories and realities as we speak.
Example: "The Theory of Constructed Linguistics explains why English has one word for 'love' while Greek constructed distinct words for romantic (eros), familial (storge), and selfless (agape) love. They didn't just have different labels; they constructed different emotional realities by making those distinctions speakable and thus thinkable."

The application of Critical Theory to the study of language—examining how language structures are shaped by power, how linguistic norms reflect social hierarchies, and how language can both reinforce and resist domination. Critical Theory of Linguistics asks: Whose language is considered "standard" and whose is "dialect"? How do linguistic classifications reflect colonial histories? How does language shape thought in ways that serve power? Drawing on the work of thinkers like Voloshinov, Bourdieu, and critical discourse analysts, it insists that language is never neutral—it's always political, always a site of struggle. Understanding language requires understanding the power relations that shape it.
"They say it's just grammar, but Critical Theory of Linguistics asks: whose grammar? The 'standard' English taught in schools is just the dialect of the powerful. Other dialects aren't wrong; they're just different—and devalued because their speakers lack power. Linguistics that ignores power just reinforces hierarchy. Critical theory insists on asking: who gets to decide what's correct?"

Linguists

Hym "I mean... I'm one of the greatest writer's of all time... Linguists are baffled and consider me 'Profound.' Because I know a bunch of cool stuff. Like, I know that 'Prodigy' and 'Bother me' don't rhyme but RAPPERS use 'approximate rhyme' or pronunciation to make lyrics more coherent. I also think the assonance (I spelled it right but it didn't show up in my auto-correct! Another reason linguists find me compelling. I know more words than auto correct and the dictionary)"

Linguistsplaining

The explanation of something by a linguist, typically to people that do not know about or study linguistics, in a manner regarded as condescending. Usually, the linguist interrupts the conversation to annoyingly point to and explain a linguistic phenomena that just appeared in the conversation, but that everyone intuitively knows about.
- I heard Mary's children got injured in a skateboarding accident!
- Really? I did not know Mary had children!
-What you just did was to negate the presupposition: " Mary's children!"
-Can you stop linguistsplaining to me!
