It means that the friendship is slowly becoming silent or dying. You may seem to find that when you are in a silent friendship that the ways in which you share your time will be difficult or a one-way/ short talking session. If you feel as if you are stuck in a silent friendship, you should try and fix the situation if you want the friendship to continue or just leave the friendship to slowly die.
