Mod, in this day and age, does not mean some one who dresses like there stuck in the 60's, its short for London Modern, named such for the original location it began, London.
Mod can also be considered 'indie' in the states, refering to things that are ahead of the fashion trends.

Google Mod clothing and click on mod cloth, that should give a good example.
