Sweet Grass

A "sweet grass" is when someone very slyly or indirectly snitches on someone.

"Who drank my Coke out of the fridge?"

A grass would say "I seen Mark take it"

A sweet grass would say "not me, why don't you ask Mark?"

"Was my boyfriend with you last night?"

A grass would say: "no, he was cheating on you with some girl he met at the pub"

A sweet grass would say: "no, he said he was going back to his girlfriend's house, I assumed he meant you, obviously not"

Snake in the Grass

When the perception of a situation or event is not the way it first appears, but has a much more serious and sinister hidden intent not readily apparent to a casual observer .

When a house burglary is reported by the owner, but when the police arrive to inspect, the clues do not quite mach up with a burglary, but look like the owner has "staged" a burglary for the intent of filing a false insurance claim. The detective might say 'I think there is a snake in the grass, with this robbery'

Snake in the grass

Someone who pretends to be something other than what they are, while hiding a nefarious agenda.

Note (1.) A snake in the grass doesn't have to be sadistic, but they have to be self-serving enough, they don't care who they hurt in the process of achieving what they want.

Note (2.) The term "snake in the grass" has been around a long time. Long before people had lawnmowers, or constantly trimmed their lawns like a military buzz cut. So the grass metaphor used to be more obvious. When the average person's lawn used to grow past their ankles..snakes were rarely visible.

If you want to describe a cold blooded human with hidden intentions, "snake in the grass" isn't a bad choice.
