Tecumseh Valley

Song by folksinger Townes Van Zandt (1944-1997), telling the story of a girl named Caroline, who went to look for work in a valley named after Shawnee leader Tecumseh. She wants to earn money for her but also for her father, a miner. When she has earned enough to return home she receives the message that her father has died. Having lost all hope she becomes a prostitute and finally dies of unknown cause (broken heart?).

All in all a very strong and melancholic song by one of the great songwriters in American folk music. Townes Van Zandt is given credit by the documentary movie "Be Here to Love Me".
"The name she gave was Caroline
Daughter of a miner
Her ways were free
It seemed to me
That sunshine walked beside her"

"They found her down beneath the stairs
That led to Gypsy Sally’s
In her hand when she died
Was a note that cried
Fare thee well... Tecumseh Valley"

Toecutter

In Australian police slang, toecutter refers to members of the internal Ethical Standards Division (including such groups as the former Office of Police Integrity in Victoria).

In underworld slang, it refers to a criminal who preys on other criminals, using threats and extreme violence to obtain money:

'...the old toecutter activity, where you'd find out who'd done armed robbery, and you'd go around and give them the old Avon lady ring on the doorbell while they're sitting there counting out the money and take more than your fair share. And if they didn't they'd suffer the consequences.' Greg Davies, Secretary of the Victorian Police Association, interviewed on 'Tough Nuts: Australia's Hardest Criminals'.

The most famous Australian toecutter is the late Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read

The term has spread more generally throughout the community, and in workplaces is used to refer to individuals involved in assessing other employees, such as performance managers.

It is believed that the term originates in Northern Ireland, used at one time to refer to the Royal Ulster Constabulary and their torture techniques. There is no evidence Australian criminal toecutters actually cut off the toes of their victims with bolt cutters, as is commonly believed: this would seem to be a myth, probably manufactured by the toecutters themselves.
'Some cops bashed a suspect and he went public about it. Now they've got the toecutters investigating them.'

'I heard you've got a meeting with the toecutters this 'arvo. Good luck.'

Tecumseh

1.) Gen. Sherman's middle name.
2.) The great Shawnee leader who rose to power to lead the Native tribes of the Old Northwest (Midwest today)against continued pressure by the Army, frontiersmen, and new settlers. He is most well-known for his efforts during the War of 1812, in which he fought a series of engagements with the US Army in battles such as The Thames in Canada. He was eventually killed in 1813, and was a martyr to many Native Americans.
General William Tecumseh Sherman was from Ohio; the Great Shawnee tribal leader Tecumseh was from Ohio, too.

Tecumseh

Tecumseh was a manufacture of air cooled small engines used on equipment such as lawn mowers, generators, and snow blowers. These engines were very popular on snow blowers and push mowers on all makes and models up and were in direct competition with Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Honda, and Kawasaki.

Early models of engines rivaled that of Briggs and Stratton, and were considered to be a good engine. However by the late 1990s, Tecumseh's reputation had been tarnished by the fact that their later engine designs have been less than perfect. The most common problems with these engines was a poorly designed carburetor and some models had weak connecting rods. They are somewhat unloved because of these faults which caused Tecumseh to file for bankruptcy in 2008 and production of engines was seized.

These engines were very easy to work on compared to a Briggs and Stratton's at the time and they could last a long time if the oil was checked and changed regularly. Tecumseh engines were a popular choice for go karts and mini bikes, and engines can still be found today in limited quantity for cheap. Today, people either love them or hate them, depending on your experience.

Tecumseh engines can still be found today under the LCT (Liquid Combustion Technology) brand that mainly produces engines for snow blowers. These new engines are essentially Chinese Honda clones.
"Whatever happened to the Tecumseh engines?
"They were once great engines, but the last ones made were total garbage. I used to have one on my snow blower in the 1980s and it ran great for years. Then I bought a new snowblower in 2007 and it blew up in an hour. Then they just went out of business. Those engines were still better than the junk Chinese engines we have today."
