A phrase of Ned Kelly origin, that refers to police officers. The police of the times were characterised by thier jackets, which are notably absent from the uniform of today. Kelly was notoriously a hater of the police. Putting on the jacket refers to enroling at a police station.
By putting on the jacket, one signs themselves up for hatred from the criminals of the world.

Putting on the Ritz 

The act of sitting down (usually on a couch) with a box of Ritz crackers. The subject sitting down will usually originally have the intent of eating 5 or 6 crackers, but ends up eating a whole package of Ritz.
Man 1: Man, I was Putting on the Ritz last night.

Man 2: You're such a fatass.

Taking Ritz crackers, shitting on them and then feeding them to your partner.

Putting on the Rits 

Studies show that "putting on the rits" simply meant that one who is acquired the rits cracker, is either eating or applying it to a substance of another genre of food. Also adding it to some other type of edible food.
Person 1: Whats bill doing to those rits and cream cheese?
Person 2: He's putting on the rits.
