(v.) To ignore inexpedient and inconvenient facts or realities, think “Yes we can, Yes we can,” and proceed with optimism using those facts as an inspiration (literally, as fuel). It is used to elicit success in a personal endeavor. One explanation holds that it is the opposite of kobamu. (which means to refuse, reject, or oppose).

A contributor to a mailing list for Japanese-English translation that I read reports that the verb obamu is gaining currency on the Kyoto University campus. He writes, “It means something along the lines of, ‘to ignore anything which appears to make you likely to fail or (be) wrong, and blindly surge ahead (preferably chanting, “yes we can, yes we can”)’.” He adds that he heard a friend jokingly try to cheer someone up by saying, “obandoke, omae.” (オバんどけ、お前.)

If I had to translate that on the fly, it would come out something like, “Lighten up and think positive, guy!”

Balack Obama

In some Asian-speaking lands (using this mispronounced version of "Black Obama"), it was believed that this is how Americans addressed Barack Obama.

In part, the confusion stemmed from the similarity of the "L" and "R" sounds within their spoken languages and the fact that the skin-color-obsessed USA focused so much attention on their first "black" president.
"So his name is not Balack Obama (aka Black Obama). It's Barack Obama!"

"Ah! So what's the diffelence?"

Obama-ing

Saying something in public detrimental to someone else without realising or considering the detrimental effects to yourself and your own interests. As an example President Barack Obama stated that the USA would be in no hurry to secure a trade deal with a United Kingdom outside of the EU. This crude attempt at blackmail failed to take into account the fact that the UK imports as much from the USA as it exports, so American manufacturers would suffer. Not only that, no trade deal means no Scotch Whisky, no Rolls-Royce cars but it goes much further than that. The next time the USA makes a mess of its foreign policy and wants British troops to come and do some of the dying for them, guess what the answer’s going to be. Basically Obama-ing is just another way of saying talking shit.
“With his bullshit about no trade deal with the UK Obama is just Obama-ing.”
“Oh, you mean talking through his arse.”
