Desperation

What really motivates somebody that is uber competitive about everything.
Desperation to win at something is not a battle for supremecy. There is no supremecy to win, it's a matter of what you lose in life.

Illusion

You might have thought Jack Palance and Matt Damon were really Irish (or South African for Matt Damon), or Colin Farrell was really Italian, or Jeffrey Wright was really a Dominican that was racist against black people, or that Lorraine Bracco was Jewish and Ray Liotta was Italian (who knows who the guy really is but him) until you looked it up on Wikipedia (or behind you). Then they start to seem a little bit more like posers trying to talk weird than people that teenagers look up to or try to become.
The usher didn't want some schoolboy showing up late to the show, the quiet heped maintain the illusion.

Nurse Ratched

The Nurse from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
The dork girl thought she was Nurse Ratched, trying to keep everyone afraid of her so that they wouldn't think that her and her mouth were afraid of them. She didn't want them to take their masks off just yet.

False respect

When somebody tries to make it seem like they respect somebody they don't really respect to get them to do something they want them to do (to get the best of somebody). Not everybody will pretend to respect somebody, but a lot of people will.
Lucky for you, you never needed the guy's false respect (or true respect) to keep going.

Nurse ratched

The nurse from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
The dork girl thought she was Nurse Ratched, and wanted everyone to be afraid of her so that they wouldn't think her and her mouth were afraid of them.
The dork was as plain as an old tin pail, which was probably why she began to copy Taylor Swift's compositions and imitate Taylor Swift, so she would have an identity that was different, and appear to not be afraid to everyone else.

There's a difference between loving where you're from (the way it is, without it having to grow or change into what some people would call world class) and saying it's better than somewhere else, or anywhere else.
A lot of people are quick to say somebody thinks where they are from is the best place in the world or that they boost it because they love where they are from. Saying America is the greatest country in the world would be doing that, but if you don't really think that way, nobody should tell you that you can't love where you're from because they assumed you were trying to make where they were from seem less than, even if you never did that with them.
