Black Pope

A nickname for the superior general of the Jesuits. Used because he wears a black robe and rules over the largest religious order in the Catholic Church.

Hans Kolvenbach, SJ, is the current Black Pope.

A nickname for the cardinal who heads the Vatican's Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Used because cardinals wear scarlet robes and the congregation has lots of power in missionary countries.

Cardinal Ivan Dias is the current Red Pope.
